Description
Jacob Wutzke joins forces with the legendary bass player Ira Sullivan on a new album that pays tribute to drummer Tony Williams.
Jacob Wutzke is a Montréal based drummer, bandleader, author, composer and music educator. Noted for his exceptional technique, creativity, and ability to listen and improvise in the moment, he is an in-demand sideman and bandleader in the jazz and creative music scenes.
A staple of the Canadian music scene, he has performed and recorded with Caity Gyorgy (2x JUNO Award Winner), Ira Coleman, Jocelyn Gould, Bryn Roberts, Pat LaBarbera, Sam Kirmayer and more.
For this his 2nd full-length album Wutzke pays tribute to legendary drummer and composer Tony Williams as well as showcases his original voice as a composer.
In early 2022, Jacob had the opportunity to work closely with legendary bass player Ira Coleman, who famously was a member of Tony Williams' Quintet in the 1980's and 90's and still had physical copies of Tony's handwritten charts for most of his compositions. For four month's under Ira's direction, they met to play the music and to discuss the way that Tony ran his group, in the process developing a beautiful rapport and group sound. The finished product is a full-length album that features 5 of Wutzke's own compositions and 5 compositions by Tony Williams. It's a beautiful musical snapshot that showcases this supergroup quintet of Coleman and Wutzke, joined by pianist Bryn Roberts, trumpeter Rachel Therrien, and tenor saxophonist Lucas Dubovik. They are in full force, inspired by the past while also pushing forward to new creative heights. The music is hard-hitting and rooted in the Blue Note sound of the 50's and 60's, but with a modern edge.
