On Magnificent Obsessions, James Danderfer presents his first album built almost entirely around original compositions inspired by Afro-Caribbean, Brazilian, and Afro-Cuban traditions. At the heart of the recording is the dynamic musical partnership between Danderfer and acclaimed pianist Miki Yamanaka. Her exuberant musical personality finds a natural foil in Danderfer's warm, understated lyricism, the two creating a musical conversation that is both playful and deeply expressive. Joined by percussionist Jack Duncan, drummer Jesse Cahill, and bassist Conrad Good, the ensemble brings each composition vividly to life with infectious grooves, rich interaction, and a shared sense of joy. Rooted in the rhythmic traditions that have shaped jazz for generations while speaking with an unmistakably contemporary voice, Magnificent Obsessions is a collection of originals that feel both refreshingly new and instantly familiar.
