Description
Canadian band leader meets Cuban legends.
In order to record her current album 'Alma de Santiago' Jane Bunnett travelled to the city which is so full of joie de vivre and Caribbean flair. She went to a studio in Santiago de Cuba where she met up with native musicians for a joint project. That is how the meeting with Los Jubilados came about, for example, a group from Casa de la Trova of nine musicians whose combined ages add up to almost 600 years. This nonet was founded by the legendary singers Mario Carcasses and Juan Gualberto 'Bebeto' Ferrer. The two pensioners (= Jubilados) felt much too young to retire and in 1994 gathered senior musicians together (the eldest is 101 and experienced the beginnings of son first-hand!). Jane Bunnett invited these elderly gentlemen of the 'Vieja Guardia', the old guard, to a studio rendezvous, as well as the comparatively young representatives of the Santiago Jazz Saxophone Quartet.
