The cwo piano concertos by Frederic Chopin (1810-1849) represenr to perfection the new line in virtuoso concertos emerging in the early 19th century. Chopin would appear to have absorbed something of the eloquence of Mozart's concertos, bur he cared nothing for the symphonic architecture of Beethoven. The bravura concertos of Hummel and Kalkenbrenner are more likely to have been the immediate models for the brilliant young pianist. Twenty-year-old Chopin needed some piano concertos of his own as a springboard for a solo career, but they also served as a showcase for his individuality as a composer, for the most eloquent championing of romantic poetty in the history of music. The concertos were his entrance ticket to the big wide world, and having once gained admission, he no longer returned to the genre.
