Description
On âFrom Memphis To Mobile,â tenor saxophonist JEFF RUPERT presents an homage to his Southern roots. Based in the blues, his original tunes, âRock Skippin',â âBad Moon,â âIf I Had Only Known,â âThe Norfolk Southern RR,â âChasin' Tail,â âWalking Home,â and âThunderbird,â collectively paint a portrait of boyhood in the Southland. Joined by the superb rhythm section of drummer John Jenkins (Horace Silver, Greg Abate), bassist Richard Drexler (Woody Herman, Dave Liebman) and world renowned piano genius Kenny Drew, Jr., Rupert's tenor sears a swath of swing throughout, lending his Stan Getz-like approach to everything from ballads to burners. He and pianist Drew go it alone on the duets: Sam Rivers' lovely âBeatrice,â the gorgeous Gershwin classic âI Loves You Porgy,â a sprightly, humid âBasin Street Blues,â and one of Duke Ellington's most beautiful and poignant compositions, âA Single Petal of a Rose.â Jeff Rupert has toured and recorded with a host of luminaries, most notably Mel Torme and Maynard Ferguson's âBig Bop Noveauâ band. His style speaks lyrically, almost vocally, like his predecessors and inspirations Lester Young and Stan Getz, whether negotiating complex chord changes or gut-bucket blues.
