Bergonzi, in 1989, the date of the recording was forty-four years old, was garnering more acclaim and notoriety than ten-twelve years earlier when he was alongside Dave Brubeck and his son Chris. A sign, this recognition, of having reached maturity, but also a result of being able to direct music toward more “heartfelt” horizons. Certainly Bergonzi is a saxophonist of strength, drawing much of his early stylistic grounding as much from Coltrane as well as from the “classic” Rollins, those of the late 1950s. But this influence has been diluted into a very personal style, very punchy and powerful. With him, Mulgrew Miller, Dave Santoro and Adam Nussbaum for an excellent hour of music.
