THE ICEMAN Chicago soul man Jerry Butler is one of the most distinguished voices in popular music. He was a creative collaborator to icons such as Curtis Mayfield and Otis Redding. Along with Sam Cooke, Ray Charles and Clyde McPhatter, Butler laid the foundations of the soul movement in the late '50s. His dignified carriage and unflappable demeanor (soulful as ever, yet smooth as ice) are what earned him the nickname 'The Iceman. 'Offering a solid introduction into this man's special brand of soul (his charm, passionate delivery, musical feeling, gospel background, sentimental mood renderings and R&B innovation), this release includes one of Jerry Butler's most overlooked albums from the onset of his solo career on the Vee-Jay label: Moon River. It was originally issued in 1962,and has been long unavailable on vinyl. These wonderful songs mark the best starting point to explore the full scope of Chicago's smoothest soul singer. The Riley C. Hampton and Phil Moore arrangements accent Jerry's unique voice while creating a distinctive mood. Here Butler delivers splendid readings of well known standards, such as Henry Mancini &Johnny Mercer's 'Moon River,' George & Ira Gershwin's 'Someone to Watch Over Me,'Jerome Kern's 'Smoke Gets in Your Eyes,' and Kurt Weill's 'September Song,' among others. Additional highlights include Luther Dixon's 'Rainbow Valley,' the self-penned'Butterfly,' and the classic Butler/Curtis Mayfield tune 'I Found Love.'In addition to the original album, this limited collector's edition includes 3 bonus tracks from the same period: 'Aware of Love,' 'I'm a Telling You' (both co-written by Butler and Curtis Mayfield), and a beautiful reading of Brook Benton and Clyde Otis' 'One by One.'
