Description
Jo Stafford was the biggest selling female artist in post-war America. From 1944 to 1954 she chalked up sixty seven Top 30 hits as a solo performer with another ten Top 30 hits with Gordon MacRae and a further eight Top 30 chart entries with Frankie Laine.
Blessed with perfect pitch and control, and possibly the most versatile singer of the period, she was able to successfully record pop songs, show tunes, standards, country, folk and religious numbers. She even tried comedy and as Darlene Edwards (her alter-ego) she lampooned emerging musical trends singing a half-tone sharp and won a Grammy Award.
In 1955 Jo Stafford was presented with a platinum disc for selling more than 25,000,000 records. She was equally popular in the United Kingdom and was the first female singer to top the British charts in November 1952 with 'You Belong To Me'. There were frequent personal appearances here and Jo made a TV series in London for ATV.
This CD presents 25 songs recorded by Jo Stafford between 1950 and 1952 including her original version of 'You Belong To Me', a US chart-topper for 12 weeks. Many of the songs are making their first appearance on CD.
