Description
The lovely voice of Jo Stafford reigned over the airwaves for most of the 1940s and 1950s with million-selling hit records. So popular was she that Columbia Records gave her a Diamond Award as the first recording artist to sell 25,000,000 records.
Her hits have appeared on many compilation 'Best Of' CDs, but a huge number of her lesser known recordings are still unavailable and the main purpose of this CD release is to fill a few of those gaps, and in doing so, to illustrate just what a wide range of musical styles she covered. Many of the 30 tracks here are making their first re-appearance since their initial release - and one or two have not been previously available in the UK in any form whatsoever.
Tracks include rare Stafford duets with Red Ingle and country singer Tex Williams, plus others with her regular singing partner was Gordon MacRae. Also included is the rare House Party 'live' recording supposedly made at the home of Jo and Paul Weston where we get to hear Jo in an informal setting entertaining guests Frankie Laine, Liberace and Dave Brubeck.
This release, including as it does, comedy, country, religious material, show tunes, pop songs, standards, novelty and much more, is proof that Jo Stafford definitely deserves the description 'America's most versatile singing star'.
