Near The Pond, the new album from American cornetist Kirk Knuffke, Swedish bassist and cellist Thommy Andersson and Swedish vocalist Josephine Cronholme, explores cross-continental friendships and cultural exchanges in a project inspired by the literary works of Swedish-American author Carl Sandberg.
All three main members have worked both together and alongside a wide range of collaborators internationally, influenced not only by jazz but also bu blues and folk music. They are joined on the recording by American drummer Kenny Wollesen and viola players Lena Fankhauser and Marta Potulska, alonside vocalist Melissa Coleman.
The songs on the album are, for the post part, easily accessible to listeners and relatively short in length. The improvisation is free and few specific musical agreements were made in advance regarding forms and arrangements. This is a well planned, beautifully executed production that does justice to the sometimes daringly loose and fresh structural energy of Sandberg's poetry.
