No risk, no fun - 'Beauteous Tales and Offbeat Stories', the second album by Finland based Kari Ikonen Trio, thrives on the magic of contrasts. Awarded pianist Kari Ikonen, drummer Markku Ounaskari -Finland's jazz musician of the year -and Armenian bass player Ara Yaralyan put together a selection of artful original compositions, a Bollywood hit and an Armenian love song but also recorded a number of free improvisational pieces created in the studio without rehearsal. By taking a risk like this the trio manages to energetically capture their exceptional dynamic and creativity onto a record.
