Alberta born, award-winning drummer Karl Schwonik grew up on a farm, where he was exposed to countless musical situations ranging from polka to jazz. When he released '1+4' in 2011, Schwonik embarked on his 11th tour throughout North America as a leader. His most recent tours were in support of his debut solo album âVisions from the Farmâ, which was nominated for a 2010 Western Canadian Music Award and was the winner of a DownBeat Magazine Composition award.<br><br>'Schwonik was featured across Canada on CBC Radio 2 as a part of a the series 'NEXT: Canada's Music Future,' was featured nationally on CBC's 'Canada Live!', was the winner of the AFM International Diversity award, was the winner of the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta's Emerging Artist Award, and was the winner of the VSA Arts International Young Soloist Award amongst many other highlights. Schwonik was also named one of Calgaryâs 'Top 40 Under 40' in 2009 by Avenue Magazine. He is the youngest person ever to be given this honour. He has since won the TD Grand Jazz Award from the Montreal Jazz Festival for his work with the Hutchinson Andrew Trio.<br><br>Schwonik's performing credits include: Dave Douglas, Chucho Valdes, Dave Liebman, Sonny Fortune, David Braid, Jens Lindemann, P.J. Perry, Tommy Banks, Hugh Fraser, Rémi Bolduc and many others. In addition Schwonik has been featured in over 100 newspapers and magazines throughout North America.<br><br>1+4 is Karl Schwonik's dream project, as it bring together two of his favourite musicians: saxophonist Rémi Bolduc and trumpeter James Davis. <br><br>The project name 1+4 is a play on words, as Rémi has his own project named 4+1. In this case, Rémi is the 1 â' the teacher; and the band is the 4 â' the pupils. Rémi is an unbelievable source of energy, talent and knowledge, and Karl is truly honored to have him join the band on this recording.<br><br>The '1+4' project started in the summer of 2010 when Karl and band completed an 8-city tour of Alberta and taught at the week-long Wetaskiwin Jazz Camp. On the tour, the 1+4 group visited cities with large francophone populations in an effort to bring the cross-cultural, bilingual project to the French-speaking community of the province.
