Kathrine Windfeld's Salt Sea Atlas is an ambitious and deeply personal jazz album built around eight compositions exploring contrasts between light and darkness, movement and stillness, and the outer world and inner emotional life.

Performed by lineups ranging from a quintet and septet to an 11-piece ensemble and 17-piece big band, the album gives Windfeld an unusually broad sonic palette. Recorded in just two focused days at The Village Recording in Copenhagen, the music moves between intimate transparency, intricate ensemble writing, powerful grooves, and sweeping orchestral climaxes.

The journey begins with 'Svendborg Silhouette,' inspired by the harbor and skyline of Windfeld's hometown. 'Lakeside Lament' enters a dreamlike borderland of memory and loss, while 'Going Feral' builds from tightly woven saxophones into seductive dissonance and an intense groove. 'River of Haikus' offers a brighter, folk-tinged breathing space, and 'Concrete Ballerina' transforms the image of a dancer frozen in motion into a melancholic and atmospheric soundscape.

At the album's center is the three-part big band suite 'Immortal Horseman,' which gathers momentum from a march-like pulse before erupting into a dramatic orchestral finale. The closing 'Time and Tide' returns to a smaller quintet setting, bringing the album to a peaceful and reflective conclusion.
