Bruno Strobl's album Überwärts is a profound exploration of sound and Zen philosophy. The string quartets on this album are characterised by variations, contrasts and tonal shifts and reflect the fluidity of drifting clouds. Originally composed around the turn of the millennium, the quartet Überwärts marks the end of a personal phase for Strobl that was strongly influenced by Zen without strict practice. 21 years later, he revisits these themes and creates a cycle that builds on the minimalist elements of the earlier quartet. While each piece in the cycle is interconnected, it also stands on its own and embodies the essence of the circular and meditative nature of Zen.
