Description
Acclaimed band's first release in 7 years, released just as leader Lafayette Gilchrist has taken over the piano chair in the legendary Sun Ra Arkestra
Baltimore-based pianist Lafayette Gilchrist reconvenes his hip-hop, funk and go-go fueled ensemble New Volcanoes for the exuberant Move With Love, the acclaimed band's first release in seven years. The album arrives as Gilchrist embarks on a new chapter in his ever-unpredictable career, as he takes over the piano chair in the legendary Sun Ra Arkestra, including the band's recent performance at the Kennedy Center in his native Washington, DC, celebrating newly-minted NEA Jazz Master Marshall Allen. While the title Move With Love captures the infectious, joyous, groove-heavy sound that New Volcanoes has honed over the last two decades, it's also a plea for community during turbulent times. 'We need to move with love,' Gilchrist insists, 'because the whole world seems to be moving in the opposite direction. The only way to move towards the future is with humanity, with compassion, with care - with love.'
...
In 1993 Gilchrist formed New Volcanoes, as a quartet that also contained trumpeter Freddie Dunn, bassist Vince Loving, and drummer Nate Reynolds. Trumpeter and sound engineer Mike Cerri was soon added, and Gilchrist recorded his first album, The Art Is Life, as a sextet with James Dephilipo added on euphonium. This was self-released, as was Gilchrist's second album, Asphalt Revolt. He played with the New Volcanoes and gave solo performances on the East Coast for several years after graduating. Gilchrist subsequently obtained a recording contract with Hyena Records, but decided to remain in Baltimore, based on his belief that NYC-based musicians tended to converge on a particular style of playing.
Following their 1st release of original material, 2005's Towards the Shining Path (Hyena), Gilchrist's 2008 New Volcanoes album Soul Progressin' received a four-star review from DownBeat.
His composition 'Assume the Position' was used in the score for the HBO drama television series The Wire. His compositions have also been used in the HBO series Treme & The Deuce.
