Flute sonatas by Poulenc, Pierné and Mignone trace a twentieth-century journey through lyricism, irony, virtuosity and imagined Frenchness.

Very little is known of English composer Richard Jones, a contemporary of G. F. Handel. He was a famous violinist, who became concertmaster of the most important British theatre, the Royal Theatre of Drury Lane, in 1730. He also penned several works for the stage, although unfortunately only scraps of his output survive to present day. We have, however, a fascinating testimony of his gifts and skills in the form of his Six Suites for keyboard (which were followed by Six Suites for violin and continuo ten years later), recorded here. They are delightful to hear, with a variety of different styles and reminiscences of national characters, and they are utterly original in their unusual disposition of the dances.
