For eight years a multi-instrumentalist with Vancouver Celtic folk crew Spirit of the West, Linda McRae had plenty of help when she put together her first solo record. On 1997's Flying Jenny, what began as a few friends helping out on a handful of songs quickly turned into a Can-rock all-star album, in which members of the Tragically Hip, Blue Rodeo, the Band, Junkhouse, and Crash Vegas all pitched in. Not surprisingly, the record sounds nothing like the fiddle fire of her former band. Colin Linden produced it, so it's no surprise that much of Flying Jenny has a blues feel, but the record also weaves into country and more straight-ahead rock-pop.
