The Vespers or evening service focuses on the Canticle of the Blessed Virgin Mary, or the Magnificat. At the core of our Christian tradition and culture is a song, sung by a young mother-to-be at the moment when she realizes the enormity of what is aboutto happen, God becoming man. The song demonstrates a number of things: here, the focus is no longer on wealth or Violence, human manipulation or false gods. The singer is a young woman, the Mother of God, whose entire being is full of praise. The songis the essence of it all. This Vesper is traditional in its texts, a variation on an ancient form of divine service and a meditation on sacred texts. – Jyrki Linjama
