Description
Louisiana Red's Anti-Nuclear Blues returns in a newly mastered edition, bringing back the acclaimed 1983 album while adding six live bonus tracks recorded at the 1981 American Folk Blues Festival. Born Iverson Minter in Alabama in 1932, Louisiana Red endured an extraordinarily difficult childhood before becoming a blues musician, eventually developing a raw, deeply personal style shaped by the hardships and experiences of his life.
Inspired to pursue the blues after encountering Muddy Waters, Red played with John Lee Hooker during the late 1950s and subsequently built a career distinguished by intensely autobiographical songwriting and an unvarnished approach to traditional blues. He moved to Europe during the mid-1970s, where appearances on WDR's Rockpalast and at the Montreux Jazz Festival brought him to a wider audience. During the 1980s, promoter Fritz Rau also featured him in the American Folk Blues Festival, placing Red among the American blues musicians whose European performances helped sustain and expand the music's international following.
Originally released in 1983, Anti-Nuclear Blues applies Red's direct songwriting to social and political concerns as well as personal experience. Songs including "Anti-Nuclear Blues," "Reagan Is for the Rich Man," "Starving in Detroit," "Still Crying About Detroit" and "No More Destruction in This Land" give the record a topical dimension, while "Tribute to Tampa Red," "I'm Tired," "Bessie" and "I'll Get to Victory" broaden its emotional range. The original vinyl pressing subsequently became a sought-after release among blues collectors.
This Bonus Track Edition marks the album's first appearance on CD and supplements the original recording with six performances from the 1981 American Folk Blues Festival, including "Woodchopping Blues," "Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky," "I Love," "Flip, Flop and Fly" and "Shake, Rattle and Roll." Newly mastered for this release, Anti-Nuclear Blues provides a substantial document of Louisiana Red during an important period of his European career, combining one of his notable acoustic blues albums with previously separate live material from the era.
