Description
On this live-concert recording, you can hear the rhythms of Harlem in Ellington's rarely performed orchestral works, Harlem (1950) and Night Creature (1955). This program also includes Mood Indigo and Caravan, two of Duke's greatest hits, expanded for full orchestra by composer/conductor David Berger, and the Queen's Suite which Duke composed in in 1959, in honor of his meeting with Queen Elizabeth (Berger added parts for strings and harp years later). Altogether, these selections paint sonic murals with a full set of orchestral colors of an uptown panorama in full swing. The Manhattan School of Music Jazz Philharmonic, conducted by the renown jazz educator Justin DiCioccio, plays with complete professionalism, vitality, and a fresh attitude. The ensemble has performed at festivals and conferences, and includes receent alumni and rising stars Christian Sands, piano, and Jake Goldbas, drums. Guest soloists have included Paquito D'Rivera, Jon Faddis, Dave Liebman, Joe Lovano and Jane Monheit.
