Excellent performances and recording. British Women composers Vol I offers four of the best known women composers in Britain. This issue also focuses our attention on one of our most talented conductors - Odaline de la Martinez. Gramophone. Black British composer Errollyn Wallen and Lindsay Cooper have been influenced by Jazz. Wellen set texts by the poet Philip Larkin with music that shows the influence of Sidney Bechet and Pee Wee Russell. Cooper music is influenced by her involvement with Experimental Rock Groups, Jazz and Improvised Music. She was a member of the world famous Henry Cow ensemble and has written music for film, theatre and dance music. Elizabeth Maconchy and her daughter Nicola LeFanu represent the Western Classical composers. Both of their works set texts by Irish poets. Maconchy set JM Synge's beautiful translation of Petrach Sonnets and LeFanu chose an Irish poem of the 9th or 10th Century. Featured soloist in these two work is the Soprano Jane Manning . Jazz singers Adjoa Andoh and Phil Minton are featured in Cooper's work. Odaline de la Martinez is the conductor with the ensemble Lontano
