At its heart, Kung Fu Kitty is a poignant, playful retelling of the Biblical story of Exodus, reimagined through ancient Chinese folklore and featuring an all-feline cast led by Abaton mascot Frick-the-Cat as Wu Zhua ('Five Claw'). Set in a mythical era where tyrant monkeys rule and cats are forced into service, the story follows a five-clawed kitten deemed useless by the Monkey King who rises to liberate her feline kin. Shot on location at Abaton's Jersey City headquarters on hand-painted sets built to scale, the film balances fable-like gravity with DIY art-house eccentricity. Nowottny's original score serves as the connective tissue for this epic universe. Moving far beyond standard children's music or film accompaniment, she constructs a rich, cinematic soundscape using traditional keyboards, delicate acoustic instrumentation, processed electronics, and avant-garde song structures. Her compositions reflect both the comic absurdity of plush monkey overlords and the genuinely touching themes of resilience, faith, and freedom woven into Bortz's narrative. In addition to composing, performing, and recording the soundtrack, Nowottny provided the original illustrations and set designs that brought Bortz's literary world to life.
