Skymother Mountain stands as a captivating document in the discography of New York avant-garde artist Marianne Nowottny. At the center of the album is Nowottny's adaptations of classic Chinese poetry, specifically selected verses by the legendary Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai (701-762 AD). Known for his romanticism, vivid imagery, and meditative reverence for nature, Li Bai's soaring text provides an evocative foundation for Nowottny's vocal and instrumental interpretations. Rather than treating the ancient poetry as a static relic, she approaches the verses as a dynamic framework for spontaneous creation, channeling the wandering, mystical spirit of Li Bai through an uncompromising experimental lens. The primary sonic engine of Skymother Mountain is the Zheng; the traditional 21 stringed Chinese zither. Recorded live during a performance at the intimate Brooklyn venue Pete's Candy Store on October 26th, 2004.
