Description
Maluba Orchestra's debut recording is a triumphant, engaging listening experience from the first note to the last. They are a diverse gathering of musicians in terms of age, gender, background, and musical style, who create an stimulating and varied musical output, characterised by tight ensemble playing between some of the Danish jazz scene's strongest and most personal performers - many of whom lead their own groups.
The richness of the material, the voices of the composers, and the glorious creative energy of the soloists should not to be mistaken for an undefined, overly-loose, and/or open-minded fantasy. Maluba is an ensemble with the necessary volume, rhythmic power, and sonic depth needed to explore musical possibilities, pursue fun, and chase unusual ideas - and they have established themselves as a thriving, exciting live band.
Percussionist Marylin Mazur famously worked with Miles Davis, as well as Wayne Shorter, Jan Garbarek, Gil Evans, Jon Balke, Dino Saluzzi, Palle Danielsson, and many other great international names - as well as numerous extraordinary groups she has led since the end of the seventies. Here, however, it's all about collaboration with two celebrated colleagues and an extended collective of musical personalities from the Danish jazz scene.
Saxophonist Fredrik Lundin is known to several generations of musicians, artists, listeners, and appreciators. First arriving on the Danish jazz scene in 1981, this versatile, elegant, and explosive musician and composer has impressed with his 11-member roots, blues, and jazz-oriented band, the Fredrik Lundin Overdrive; his collaboration with Christina von Bulow on new interpretations of Lars Gullin's melodies; and his more rock-oriented group Offpiste Gurus. All this and much more while being a prominent composer and member of experimental ensembles, as well as theatre and jazz constellations (including Marylin Mazur's Group).
Kasper Bai completes this triumvirate, and not 'just' as the guitarist, but also as an original and virtuosic voice, who besides being used as organizer by other artists is also a prominent composer, creating numerous works for symphony orchestras, big bands, choirs, chamber ensembles, and much more.
