Description
The art of Ballads and Lovesongs offered with delicate interplay and a brilliant Art Lande on piano
The title says it all! Almost all of the ten cuts are standards (many with the word 'Love' in the title: Gershwin's 'The Man I Love,' Porter's 'I Love You' and 'What is this Thing Called Love,' Rogers and Hart's 'Lover,' and the chestnut, 'Lover Man.' Giammarco plays them straight on his tenor (and a touch of soprano) saxophone, backed by a tight rhythm section of drummer Roberto Gatto, bassist Piero Leveratto, and pianist Art Lande. Lande is more aggressive than usual, to good effect. Overall, the group reworks the pieces ever so slightly. The saxophonist offers a full, luscious tone. While there is no new ground broken, if you enjoy the kinds of songs on the CD, you should enjoy the album. Everything is played to immaculate perfection, with tempos varied. The recording quality is excellent. (Steve Loewy, AllMusic)
