Description
Mellonova straddle the divide between dream pop and space rock. Think Swervedriver meets Doves.
Toronto-based Mellonova further the development of their âsonically charged, psychedelically infusedâ sound with this new self-titled EP. Although they share many of the drone and space elements common to turn-of-the-century âToronto soundâ space rock, don't lump them in with the legions of shoegazer bands popular at the time: Mellonova consciously maintain a balance between out-there and down-to-earth. The tunes on this 5 track EP are well-constructed, with fuzzed-out guitar riffs bolstered by intricate bass lines and complex drum parts, so that beneath the echoey chords and effects pedals, the songs are built on hooky cores that make them accessible. The overall effect is of pop songs given the Frankenstein treatment -- stripped down to their basic components and stitched back together to create unexpected, monstrously good, new life forms. The lead track on this release, âHideeho,â ended up in a Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode, after an indie compilation featuring their song got into the hands of Sarah Michelle Gellar herself, who in turn passed it on to the show's music editor. Drawing sonic influences from some great UK artists like the Verve or Radiohead, this 5 track EP still maintains Mellonova's flair for atmospheric guitar pop.
