NY saxophonist Michael Blake's ambitious septet project commemorates a tragic migrant incident in Vancouver's history.
In 1914 a ship carrying Indian immigrants was turned away by means of exclusionist laws. Using complex arrangements and words, Blake offers a diverse musical program around tolerance, acceptance and assimilation in today's world. Moving between jazz tradition and freer, sometimes raga-inspired expression, the music is interpreted with extraordinary skill by his team of Vancouver improvisers.
