The music label INTUITION will be celebrating the centenary of the birth of Mikis Theodorakis on 29 July. Despite the dramatic social circumstances accompanying and at times dictating his life, music always remained his first love and provided the foundation of his very existence. He experienced two major fracture points in his life, both accompanied by a departure to different locations: his move from Paris to Athens in 1960 and his return to Paris from Athens in 1980. Although Theodorakis had achieved success with his symphonic works across the whole of Europe by the 1960s, he subsequently composed songs almost exclusively during his time in Athens - a total exceeding 800 including large-scale oratorios which gained him international fame. After the military coup d'état in 1967, Theodorakis's music was banned throughout Greece and he was arrested and tortured. A worldwide campaign secured his release in 1970 and he embarked on a legendary global concert tour protesting against the military dictatorship which concluded with the fall of the Junta in 1974. Back in Paris in 1980, Theodorakis resumed his compositional career from the period prior to 1960 and created his major symphonies and an opera tetralogy completed in 2001. Released by Intuition, this 2CD set features songs Theodorakis recorded himself at home in Greece during the 1970s & early 1980s singing and accompanying himself on piano. Their charm lies precisely in their intimacy revealing not only the composer, but also the man Mikis Theodorakis. The lyrics are largely by renowned poet Lefteris Papadopoulos.
