Description
NYC bass player Neal Minor's excellent new album on Cellar Music with his trio featuring Chris Byars on tenor saxophone and Jason Tiemann on drums.
NYC bass player Neal Minor's new album on Cellar Music entitled 'Invisibility'. Featuring songs composed by Minor, inspired by jazz from the 1950s into the 1960s, and by musicians such as Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Kenny Dorham, Horace Silver, Benny Golson, Art Farmer, Lucky Thompson, Tommy Flanagan, Barry Harris, and bassist-composers like Ray Brown, Red Mitchell, Paul Chambers, Oscar Pettiford, and Sam Jones.
Minor has always been drawn to writing contrafacts because, when musicians are deeply familiar with the harmony of a tune, creativity and connection become second nature. Most of the tunes on this recording are based on American standards such as There's No You, Indian Summer, Sweet and Lovely, Lullaby of the Leaves, and The Best Thing for You Is Me, alongside four original compositions and two blues tunes.
His trio; with Chris Byars on tenor saxophone and Jason Tiemann on drums, functions as a true collective, exploring the full range of textures and colors that can be achieved with just three instruments. His compositions often include introductions, interludes, shout choruses, and codas and the trio love experimenting with unaccompanied solos, stop-time passages, and unique introductions for each instrument.
It's a deeply personal conversation among three like-minded souls who genuinely enjoy one another's company--on and off the bandstand.
