Description

The Nels Cline Trio play almost all originals & one Gil Evan classic.

Born in Los Angeles in 1956, Nels is the twin brother of percussionist Alex Cline. Nels has been performing contemporary improvised music all his post-adolescent life. Hearing John Coltrane at age 15 ended any exclusively rock 'n roll direction. '82 - '84 Nels played with Wayne Peet's Doppler Funk, a free blowing funk band which later became a collective trio called Rhythm Plague. '83 - '86 Nels was a member of Julius Hemphill's JAH band which toured the US and Europe and recorded the live LP Georgia Blue, '82 - '86 saw performances in L.A. with bassist Charlie Haden in duo and trio settings but mostly as charter member of his West Coast Liberation Music Orchestra. '83 finds Nels involved with the rock collective BLOC. '87 saw the recording of Nels' first leader project Angelica (ENJA-5063) and in 1989 he founded the Nels Cline Trio with electric bassist Mark Sims and drummer Michael Preussner playing to enthusiastic audiences in The L.A. area. 'Nels Cline has to be one of if not the most creative guitar player... (sorry Hendrix) perhaps ever. On all of his albums, whether with his trios, group improvisations and microtonal excursions ranging from two to ten players, Nels pours his heart and mind into the music. He really synthesizes a romantic, expressive musicality, but equally an intellectual sophistication towards writing and playing. His compositions are playful, witty, daring, they run the gamut of a psychologist's web of mood and emotive sub-genres. Silencer has Nels working with Mark London Sims, a different bassist from the other three Trio albums (which see Bob Mair assuming bass roles). Sims seems to be capable of any number of styles and intensities. Michael Preussner played drums on all four Trio albums. His 'liquid-hitting-surface' style weaves with Nels exceedingly well, allowing the two of them to dart in, around, and over each other. For fans of Nels, this is a good chance to see the beginning branch off into his lead-role based music.'
