Description
Critic- and audience-awarded recording that witnesses Tom Harrell joining the band.
This new quintet, by Phil Woods, features the entry of a trumpeter such as Tom Harrell. And it is to these, no doubt, that attention immediately goes, from the first notes, at full force. This trumpet reveals the invigorating breath of the great musicians who have surely inspired it, but now clear is the personality of Harrell, who has arrived at his state of grace, maturity and (above all) the recognition he deserves at already thirty-nine years of age, with a long career behind him, and a baggage of at least thirty records with the most varied leaders and ensembles.Wonderful soloist, technically gifted. Stylistically ingenious. He has an open sonority, with some vibrato whimsy, and quizzical phrasing, often pushed very naturally into the high register. There is also to admire Phil Woods himself, this excellent saxophonist who never betrayed his youthful worship of the great Charlie Parker, but at the same time never debased him into slavish, repetitive, anonymous imitation: his style has gradually developed along a personal line, and the so called Parkerism remains all internal, allowing itself to be felt at most in some fast tempo.
