Pious songs (chansons pieuses) are a medieval genre with a religious subject. More than the troubadours of Southern France, the trouveres in the north of the country dedicated their songs both to persons of note on earth and to heavenly kings and queens. The trouvere repertoire also included love songs, Crusade songs, motets, dance songs and even parodies. The common theme running through the songs is above all often love; a confession told in the first person is frequently transformed into apious song by means of beautiful metaphors. One of the leading ideas of secular poetry, the joie of life and love, is further exalted in these songs as heavenly bliss.
