The compose r was decked with the usual laurel wreaths and the reviews we re full of praise, but the true meaning of the symphony eluded almost everyone. The audience had come along expect ing to hear something akin to the tragic, monumental second symphony, and the optimistic, well proportioned third seemed insignificant by comparison. 'The listene rs ex pected the opera to be followed by a nationalistic anthem and were disappointed to hear something that seemed to them to be hermetic and that, to crown it all, was lacking in pomposity and solemnity. These are the properties the majority of finnish music-lovers always expect in a newwork,' wrote Henri-Claude Fantapie, a French expert on Finnish music. He went on to say that the symphony was clearly the workof a Finn, but it could just as well be subheaded Sinfonia Gallica. It is an original blend of the Finnish mindset with French espritand elegance of expression. - Riitta Pulliainen
