Description
GROUP CHAT' is the third major album that German-born guitarist PETE ROTH has to his name
Group Chat is the third major album led by German-born guitarist Pete Roth and features the Pete Roth Trio lineup of Roth on guitar, Mike Pratt on bass, and Bill Bruford on drums. The group moves freely through jazz, funk, contemporary classical influence, improvisation, and progressive music, creating a performance style that is exploratory, rhythmically alert, and deliberately resistant to easy categorization.
Bill Bruford is one of the most influential drummers associated with progressive rock and jazz-rock. He was a founding member of Yes, later became a long-term member of King Crimson, and also led his own groups while developing a highly distinctive approach built around precision, unusual meters, acoustic and electronic percussion, and improvisation. Group Chat documents his return to headline performance after a 13-year hiatus and presents his first newly released material in 19 years.
The album's repertoire reflects the trio's broad musical reach, from the original compositions 'Full Circle,' 'Part of the Charm,' and 'Group Chat' to an improvisation on the Largo from Dvořák's Symphony No. 9 and an interpretation of 'Summertime.' The Progressive Aspect observed that an audience initially composed largely of progressive-rock followers left as jazz fans, while Fasching in Stockholm described the trio's mixture of jazz, funk, contemporary classical music, and Dvořák as brilliantly unruly rather than nostalgic or comfortable.
Produced by Pete Roth and Bill Bruford for Winterfold Records, this two-disc digipak edition includes the complete audio album alongside a bonus DVD featuring live performances and spoken introductions. The package also contains a booklet with extensive notes and group images, documenting the interaction between Roth's guitar, Pratt's bass, and Bruford's unmistakable drumming.
