Not much is known if Storace`s life; the title-page of the collection tells us that he was working as vicemaestro di cappella to the senate of Messina in Sicily. The book was published in venice and since even the style of Storace resembles more the northern Italian than the Roman-Neapolitan school, scholars have deducted that he may have spent his youth in the north. In any case, with this one collection only, he is considered to be a historically significant link between the two Romans, Frescobaldi and Bernardo Pasquini. Storace abandoned the traditional ecclesiastical tonality on favor of major-minor tonality, introducing to the Italians the new way of titling the pieces by tonalities.
