Steve Davis and David Hazeltine's new sextet Primary Influences includes Cory Weeds, Steve Nelson, David Williams, and Byron Landham.

It had been nearly two years since the passing of trumpeter Jim Rotondi--a loss felt deeply not only by those closest to him, but across the jazz community, and especially within the long-running collective One for All. With Rotondi's absence, it became clear that One for All had reached its natural conclusion.
Out of that realization, however, came the beginning of something new.
Trombonist Steve Davis and his longtime collaborator David Hazeltine set out to form a new sextet--one that would honor the spirit of their shared history while opening the door to a slightly different sonic identity. The group embraced a broader palette, reflected not only in its instrumentation but also in its repertoire. The album pays tribute to some of the music's great voices, with nods to Cedar Walton, Bobby Hutcherson, and Curtis Fuller--figures whose influence continues to shape the language of modern jazz.
The origins of this musical partnership stretch back decades. The two co-leaders first crossed paths in the late 1980s at Art Blakey's apartment, where members of the Jazz Messengers had gathered for a commercial shoot. By the early 1990s, they were performing regularly together at a small Upper West Side club called Augie's, building the musical chemistry that would eventually lead to the formation of One for All.
There are no strangers in this new ensemble, Primary Influences. The group is built on decades of shared experience, bringing together musicians whose relationships extend far beyond the bandstand. Saxophonist Cory Weeds, vibraphonist Steve Nelson, bassist David Williams, and drummer Byron Landham each contribute from a connection that can only come from years of collaboration.
Primary Influences is both a tribute and a continuation--a reflection on where the music has been, and a statement of where it can still go.
