Ray Allen's story now spans nearly three decades. It all began in 1997,
when a young Mathias Arnold joined a band called 'The
Thunderbirds'-which had already been active for three years- in his
hometown in the countryside in the Leipzig area. With Mathias as the
singer and rhythm guitarist, the group later renamed itself to the
'Moonlight Classics.'
Alongside the 'Moonlight Classics', Mathias began working on a new solo
project in 2004. The search for a suitable 'stage name' proved somewhat
more difficult than initially anticipated. It wasn't supposed to be a
fanciful, particularly flashy name, but rather one that would suit the
music he was performing and could have fit seamlessly into a rockabilly
'Various Artists' compilation. In his search for a suitable stage name,
Mathias turned to two artists he had known and admired for many years.
Milton Allen, with his voice - which, by rockabilly standards, seemed
unusually classically trained - and the vocal prodigy Roy Orbison
ultimately served as the inspiration for Mathias's new stage name, Ray
Allen. Whether Ray comes at you with an up-tempo rocker, a heartbreak ballad, a
teen pop song, a country tune, an original, or a cover, he always sounds
powerful, raw, and authentic. You have to know when his recordings were
actually made to realize that they were created in this millennium and
not between 1957 and 1962.
