Description
Ray's late 50s recordings for the Atlantic label.
One of the towering figures of 20th century music, Ray Charles was the innovator who synthesised such disparate musical forms as gospel, rhythm & blues and jazz into the form that came to be known as soul. Ray certainly had plenty of the base material required to perform such alchemy, having overcome enormous tragedy during his early years, not least via the loss of his sight, but also the traumatic death of his brother and being a black boy in the deep south bought up by a single mother. This collection brings together the tracks Ray recorded during the mid to late 1950s for the Atlantic label, where a number of his most famous tracks such as 'What'd I Say' and 'I Got A Woman' rub shoulders with lesser known but equally important cuts like 'Tell Me How Do You Feel' and 'I Believe To My Soul'. Across the 28 tracks on this release, the road to the golden age of soul music is navigated with the man often credited just as important as Elvis Presley in the development of modern music.
