Songs by French females
Augusta Holmes, Pauline Viardot Garcia, Cecile Chaminade and Nadia Boulanger were extremely well known in their lifetime. Nadia Boulanger was better known as a teacher to great composers. All of them wrote operas and were known for their wonderful songs for voice and piano. Today we are rediscovering the works of these outstanding women who wrote songs of extraordinary variety, drama and sensitivity and with a tremendous emotional range. Garcia and Holmes showed a certain exoticism in their choice of texts. Chaminade's songs showed the grace and charm that we equate today with the'belle epoque'. Boulanger wrote songs with delicacy and a tendency to give her melodies a more coloristic role.
