Of all the musical superstars, few have so readily bestowed their aura on their colleagues as freely as pianist-composer Franz Liszt (1811-86). His aristocratic disposition is fu rther borne out by the fact that he forsook the glitter of his concert tours at a relatively early age in favour of charity events. Lim met Franz Schubert (1797-1828) as a little boy in Vienna in 1821. To him, Schubertwas simply 'the most poetic composer who ever lived'. His piano artangements of the Schubert Lieder mostly date from his years as a travelling virtuoso (1839-46), including the summers spent on the island ofNonnenwerth on the Rhine that marked his gradual shift in orientation ftom French to German culture. – Lauriala, Risto
