Description
After more than five decades of making music, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame bassist Ross Valory steps forward with All of the Above, his long-awaited debut solo album. Best known for his extensive career with Journey, Valory uses this ten-track instrumental project to reveal musical interests and abilities that extend considerably beyond the arena-rock setting most listeners associate with him. In addition to his signature bass, he plays keyboards and guitar as the album explores jazz fusion, Latin rhythms, rock and other musical territory.
Valory surrounds himself with an accomplished repertory company assembled to accommodate the record's stylistic range. Contributors include Prairie Prince of The Tubes, Santana percussionist Karl Perazzo, saxophonist Marc Russo of The Doobie Brothers and Yellowjackets, and Night Ranger keyboardist Eric Levy, with Jacob Stowe serving as engineer. The musicians provide Valory with a flexible ensemble capable of moving from intricate fusion passages to groove-driven rock and more reflective material.
The diversity is apparent throughout the program. "Wild Kingdom" brings Latin-fired energy, while "No One Wins a War" explores a more romantic side of Valory's writing. "Low Rider" offers a celebratory homage to War, and "Incident at Neshabur" revisits the Santana classic. "Tomland," "Nightflower," "Touched, Pt. II," "City Lights," "Windmill" and "Señor Blue" complete an album deliberately designed to move among different moods and musical languages rather than remain confined to a single genre.
Valory describes All of the Above as a labor of love that draws upon his accumulated experience while pointing toward his musical future. Every composition is also accompanied by a video directed and co-created by Michael Cotten and Valory, extending the project into a visual series. Produced in 2025 and released on vinyl in 2026, All of the Above presents a different side of a musician familiar to generations of Journey fans, placing Valory's instrumental imagination and versatility at the center of the record.
