Description
Ortodoxa is an album made up of music with deep poetic breath, at times melancholy, elsewhere spirited and rhythmically driven.
Salvatore Bonafede's compositions create a very Italian sound and sense of melody, particularly from Southern Italy, grafted onto the great tradition of modern jazz. Charlie Haden, Charles Mingus, Horace Silver hints of the Latin and Afro-Latin worlds, Nino Rota, Astor Piazzolla, the Venezuelan joropo, Enrico Rava; a drums and bass suite in which two interconnected, yet very different pieces feature drums and double bass as solo instruments to which the rest of the group creates a melodic background of effective and bold simplicity. A miniature dedicated to Federico Fellini in which the evocations of an Italy lost in our memory become more pronounced. A fresh, original, surprisingly evocative music that is surely destined to remain, in which the quality of the writing is always bent to an expressive urgency capable of giving us back a “landscape of the soul”; echoes of a world that belongs to the Afro-Latin side, which is as topical today as ever, which in the melodic nature and color of the various themes also contains flavors of country bands, transformed, however, into compositions of unequivocal jazz flavor and structure.
