Released in 2000 Shell Is Swell is the official debut album from Shell, a short-lived, fiercely inventive duo composed of New Jersey teenage prodigy Marianne Nowottny and her high school collaborator Donna Bailey. Coming off the heels of Nowottny's early solo work and bedroom tapes, the 15-track release captures the erratic, uncensored energy of late-'90s youth paired with high-concept experimentalism. Musically, Shell Is Swell sits at a surreal crossroads where warped synth-pop, goth rock, and punk meet modern avant-garde classical composition.
