Description
Recorded by Boz Boorer, Cranes in the City has a unique sound that crosses the Smiths with new wave Brit-pop/mod rock.
Although Torontoâs Shoot the Image is a band of the new millennia, remaining shadowy and avoiding naming band members, preferring to be scene as one unit, their story began the old-fashioned wayâon a drunken night out with friends. In 2009, the female lead singer spontaneously broke out into Nina Simoneâs song âMy Baby Just Cares For Meâ at an after-party and jaws hit the table. Her musician friends â with over 20 cumulative performing years between four members - immediately picked up ProTools and began to put together some initial demos. The recording of what would become Cranes In The City began with a chance MySpace meeting with Boz Boorer who is the guitarist, co-writer and musical director with Morrissey, founding member of The Polecats. For a year, the band and Boorer sent messages back and forth with Shoot The Image sending various recommendations for bands and films for him to check out. In time, Shoot The Image booked their first overseas gig - an acoustic show at the legendary 12 Bar Club in London, UK - and invited Boorer to come. To the band's surprise, he showed up and after a few pints, they hit it off. He invited them to record in his studio in Portugal where Boorer has worked with a bevy of artists including Adam Ant, Morrissey, Edwyn Collins, David Bowie, Lily Allen, Madness. Boorer intuitively understood where Shoot The Image was coming from and where the band wanted to go, sonically. âIt was simple to find the right sounds as I understood the sounds that they could hear in their heads,â said Boorer. âIt was fortunate, really. Thatâs why I think we were brought together - it was simple to suggest things that fit, that worked well with the songs.â We Nom Music called the result a âunique sound...reminiscent of the Smiths combined with new wave Brit-pop/mod rock.... With extreme energy coming from every member of the group they were a total treat to watch and I would go see them again in a heartbeat.â
