Recording the Gran Parti/a marked the culmination of a three-year Mozart series by the Sixth Floor Orchestra. Within the resources at our disposal, we were able to present our Finnish audiences with a little survey of the sound ideal of the Classical era while at the same time, of course, learning from our experience. Of all the instruments in the Viennese Classical period orchestra, the winds are particularly fascinating. For in addition to each instrument highlighting its own inherent sound in its solos, the ways composers of the era combined the sonorities are new to modern listeners and expand our concept of timbre.The performer can try to achieve a historically informed interpretation by studying the literature on the performance practices of the period and by using a reliable edition (in this case the facsimile of Mozart's score), but the sonorous dimensions remain the prerogative of the masters of period instruments.Jukka Rautasalo
