Music to bring people together in remembrance of this never to be forgotten time in Irish history.
Rebel songs were an integral part of Irish Republicanism at the beginning of the twentieth century and many of our most popular were inspired by historical events which took place during The Irish War of Independence. As we approach the 100th anniversary of the ending of the War on July 11th, 1921, Dolphin Records are proud to release 'Songs of the Irish War of Independence A Commemorative Collection'.
The songs featured on this 2CD set remember and pay tribute to many Irish heroes including Tomás MacCurtain, Terence McSwiney, Dan Breen, Seán Treacy, and Kevin Barry. Many pivotal events during this revolutionary period are also recalled, including The Burning of Cork City, Bloody Sunday (Dublin, 1920), The Kilmichael Ambush, and the brutalities committed by the notorious Black & Tans.
This commemorative album also includes popular ballads from previous rebellions and risings which gave expression to the spirit of Irish resistance. Highlights include some recent recordings and original songs from up-and-coming singer-songwriter Eoin Thomas: - Bloody Sunday 1920, The Burning of Cork City, and The Assassination of Tomás MacCurtain. Other newly recorded tracks include The Young Volunteer from Galloglas, and The Ballad of Seán Treacy from the new group Murphy's Law.
