Description
Spike WIlner's new album is an amazing tribute to Harry Whitaker, with Paul Gil on bass, Anthony Pinciotti on drums and George Garzone on saxophone.
Steadfast pianist, bandleader and club manager Spike Wilner has enjoyed a long tenure on the New York City and global jazz scenes, performing with the likes of The Artie Shaw Big Band, The Glenn Miller Orchestra, Maynard Furgeson & Lennie Cuje while remaining highly active as a bandleader all while managing iconic NYC Jazz shrines Smalls and Mezzrow.
For his latest album on Cellar Music, WIlner was re-inspired by the music of his late-great teacher Harry Whitaker, having dived deeply into the treasure trove of music Whitaker left recorded in the SmallsLIVE Archive. For this tribute, much of which is freely improvised, WIlner called upon long time collaborators Paul Gill and Anthony Pinciotti, as well as a special guest to play tenor saxophone in the form of the amazing George Garzone who has performed with the likes of Stanley Cowell, Cecil McBee and Lennie White.
'This music we give to the spirit of Harry and the power and dignity of his music. Jazz music can be the very best that Mankind can offer - an uninhibited view of the open soul, for all to share and grow from. Thank you Harry.'
