The Mikkeli Orchestra, predecessor of the St. Michel Strings, was founded in 1903. Once the oldest amateur and all in all the third oldest professional orchestra in Finland, it later formed the nucleus of a new orchestra maintained by an association. In 1990 it was taken over by the City of Mikkeli and it now has 12 professional players. It thus concentrates mainly on music for strings and has won acclaim both for its choice of repertoire and for its partnerships with numerous composers in Finland and elsewhere. Joint concerts with other municipal orchestras have become a major item on its agenda and the number of commissioned and regional concerts has risen steadily. Travelling is no problem for a small band of string players that can handle a full concert even without a conductor. On their debut disc (2002) the St. Michel Strings play Polish music conducted by Tadeusz Wicherek.
