Description
Debut release from the band Sucking from Austin, TX, featuring Brett Bradford, guitar player from the band Scratch Acid.
Suckling - One might expect the self-titled debut release by this solid ATX unit of outstanding
veteran musicians [(Scratch Acid, et al. guitarist Brett Bradford) (Gorch Fock, et al. bassist Win
Wallace) (Cibo Matto, et al. drummer John Paul Keenon) (Half the bands in Austin,
multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Ezra Reynolds)] to be good-- as if that weren't enough, sprinkled
throughout are some amazing guest talents, notably including Butthole Surfer J.D. Pinkus
playing a somber, shroom induced banjo solo and Scratch Acid drummer Rey Washam
absolutely ripping up the skins. That's right! 'The other half' of Scratch Acid recorded together
on a track, for the first time since 1986, and it's brilliant! There are hundreds of thousands of
hours of experience on this record and that translates to heart, soul, and a wicked delivery.
Masterful artistry aside, let's get down to what really sets this album apart. All too often upon
hearing a record's first track, one may as well have heard the entire album. Not so here. While
the band does have a cohesive, recognizable sound, it's ever-shifting in mood, tone, and
texture. These eleven tracks display depth, dimension, and diversity spanning a sprawling
spectrum from furious to tranquil and upbeat to solemn, frequently within the same song. There
are surprises around the corners. It is Rock, to be sure, but the vastness of that genre's
sub-genres are exposed in Suckling, from song to song...and again, often within a single song.
It is, metaphorically speaking, Metamorphic Rock. Digging deeper into this Rock made of many
types of Rock uncovers elements of Jazz, Blues, Classical, Swing, Funk, Soul, et cetera. Guitar,
bass, drums--yeah--but then there's organ through a Leslie cabinet, or a baby grand piano, or
a cello, or a bad-ass brass section, and genuinely emotive vocals.
Suckling is a well-made, skillfully-composed-and-performed, creative work of art.
Is it great? Objection: question is subjective. Is it good? - It's so fucking good!
