Pertti Jalava (b. 1960) has composed numerous works for orchestra (including two symphonies), various ensemble line-ups andchoir. He has also written a considerable volume for big band and his own jazz ensembles, in which he has played drums and keyboards. Works by him for string orchestra, wind orchestra, chamber ensemble, jazz ensemble and big band have won many prizes in composition competitions both national and international and have been performed by orchestras both Finnish and foreign under many distinguished conductors. Several concerts comprising some 40 works by J alava have been recorded and broadcast by the Finnish Broadcasting Company (YLE). Jalava has studied composition, and music in general, entirely on his own.
